How to compress an image online

How to compress a photo down to a given size — 200 KB, for example
Upload forms usually come with a hard limit: 200 KB for a profile photo, 500 KB for a scanned document, 1 MB for an email attachment. Switch on “Fit into”, type the number in kilobytes, and the tool searches for the highest quality that still fits the limit.
The search runs from the top down: it starts near lossless and lowers the bar only until the file fits. If even the lowest quality is too heavy, the resolution is reduced as well — which normally only happens with multi-megapixel shots and very small limits.
JPEG, PNG or WebP — which format to compress to
JPEG is the universal photo format: small files, no transparency. PNG is lossless and keeps a transparent background, which is why logos, icons and text screenshots live there — but a photo in PNG weighs several times more. WebP is usually 25–35% lighter than JPEG at the same quality, supports transparency and works in every current browser, so it is the best pick for a website.
If you would rather not think about it, leave the format on “Auto”: the image is encoded into several formats and the smallest result wins, with transparency preserved when the source had it. When a client or an old program only accepts JPEG, pick JPEG manually — the transparent background is then filled with white, and the row tells you so.
Compressing images for a website: load time and Core Web Vitals
Heavy images are the most common reason a page feels slow: the hero image is usually the very element Google measures as LCP. Mobile visitors arrive on slow networks, where an extra megabyte turns into extra seconds of waiting — and lost visitors.
The recipe is simple: cap the long side at 1920 px (1280 px is plenty for in-content blocks), compress at about 75 and serve WebP. A full-width image then fits into 100–200 KB instead of 2–3 MB while looking the same. For product cards and thumbnails, 800 px is enough.
Compressing photos for marketplaces, documents and messengers
For Amazon, Etsy or any marketplace card, sharpness matters more than megapixels: 1600–2000 px on the long side at quality 80–85 looks perfect and weighs a fraction of the original phone shot. For scans and document photos use the size limit instead — it is the quickest way to meet a form’s requirements.
Messengers and mail clients re-compress attachments on their own terms and often ruin the picture. Compress it yourself first and the quality stays under your control rather than at the mercy of an algorithm.
Batch mode: 30 images at once and a single ZIP
There is no need to process files one by one. Drop a whole folder — up to 30 images per run — and they all go through the same settings. Every row shows the size before, the size after, the percentage saved and the resulting format, with the total saving on top.
